Abstract

Toxic megacolon is defined as a non-obstructive dilation of the colon, its presentation can be total or segmental, associated with systemic toxicity. It can occur in men and women without a specific age range, with inflammatory bowel disease being the most important predisposing factor. The presentation of this entity is rare, so the history and physical examination are of utmost importance for the diagnosis and timely management of the pathology. Hemodynamic instability, systemic toxicity, as well as signs of generalized peritoneal irritation are usually the main causes for surgical intervention. We present the case of a patient with symptoms of hypovolemic shock with a diagnosis of toxic megacolon (TM) who underwent a subtotal colectomy, with a subsequent torpid evolution leading to his death.
