Abstract

Introduction: Functional dyspepsia (FD) is a pathology that includes chronic and recurrent disorders of the upper digestive tract and that has no organic origin. Its prevalence worldwide varies between 11% and 29.2%. Medical students are a population susceptible to this disorder. Despite this, in Paraguay no studies have been carried out to determine the prevalence and associated factors of functional dyspepsia. Objective: Determine the factors associated with functional dyspepsia in medical students at a private university in Paraguay. Materials and methods: An analytical cross-sectional study will be carried out, applying a closed survey in a single period of time to all participants, subsequently analyzing the association between the variables. Results: The study had the majority participation of a female population that represented 73.9% (181) with ages between 18 to 31 years (20±2.5), coming mostly from Greater Asunción 44.4% (109). Regarding marital status, 96.7% (237) report being single. Of the total number of respondents, 83% (203) stated that they did not suffer from a previously diagnosed underlying pathology. Regarding the dyspepsia evaluation test, 84% (205) do not suffer from dyspepsia. With the interpretation of the Anxiety Test it was found that 89.4% do not suffer from anxiety, while in the interpretation of the depression test it was found that 29.6% suffer from mild depression, and regarding the irritability test there is a high proportion of participants with
irritability 81.6% (200). Of the total participants, 82.9% (203) say they do not smoke. Regarding the consumption of alcoholic
beverages, 81% (138) of the participants confirm consuming alcoholic beverages and confirm the frequent consumption of coffee. Regarding the coffee consumption of the total participants, 70% (172) confirm their frequent consumption. Conclusion: This work allows us to conclude that the incidence of functional dyspepsia is low among medical students at the Universidad del Pacífico.
