Abstract

INTRODUCTION: Unstable thorax is a serious medical emergency that can result in traumatic damage to the ribs and surrounding structures. This retrospective investigation was conducted to evaluate the efficacy and clinical outcomes of surgical rib fixation in patients with this type of trauma. METHODS: Fourteen patients treated at the Prof. Dr. Manuel Giagni Trauma Hospital between 2021 and 2022 were analyzed. RESULTS: Patients were mostly male (64%) with an average age of 23 years. Causes included motorcycle accidents (50%) and falls (21%). A variety of materials were used for rib fixation, including steel wire, LCP plate and the StraCos® system. Complications were observed in 12% of cases, mainly material rejection and surgical site infection. CONCLUSIONS: Overall, the research supports the effectiveness of rib fixation in the management of the unstable thorax and suggests the need to continue to evaluate and adjust strategies to further improve outcomes in patients undergoing this procedure.
