Abstract
Introduction: Among patients with diabetes mellitus, diabetic foot is the most common complication, responsible for a large part of hospitalizations and non-traumatic amputations of lower limbs in 90% of cases.
Objective: The objective of the study was to identify the risk factors for amputations derived from diabetic foot in people with diabetes mellitus.
Methodology: This is an integrative review carried out through databases: Latin American and Caribbean Literature in Health Sciences (LILACS), System for Analysis and Retrieval of Online Medical Literature (MEDLINE), Scientific Electronic Libraly Online (SciELO), carried out in November 2021.
Results: We analysed 52 studies. Regarding the main thematic categories addressed, it was possible to categorize 5 main ones: epidemiology; evaluation of the health conditions of the diabetic patient; diabetic foot ulcers and risk factors for amputation, risk of post-amputation complications and quality of life.
Conclusion: Publicizing the factors associated with amputations derived from diabetic foot will contribute decisively to both patients, relatives, caregivers and health service professionals, democratizing information and providing the necessary guidance to anticipate this possible complication in patients with diabetes, assisting in the execution of preventive measures. strategies, promotion and recovery of patients’ health. In other words: reduce the number of non-traumatic amputations produced by the diabetic foot and all its aspects.
