Abstract

Introduction: The recommended intake of water for boys from 9 to 13 years of age is
2.4 liters/day and for girls of the same age it is 2.1 liters/day. These data are based on
the average intake of water from NHANES III study data

Objective: To evaluate the habits and practices of consumption of water and
sugary and soft drinks in boys and girls from 4th to 6th grade of a public and a private
school with respect to the recommendations of the Food Guidelines of Paraguay.

the 4th and 6th grade of Basic School Education were included, of which 118
belonged to the public school and 130 to the private school; Sociodemographic variables,
eating habits and consumption of sugary drinks, as well as water, were studied.

Results: The average age of the sample was 10.4 years, with no differences in
these averages between children from both schools. Regarding the proportion by sex,

groups studied, regarding the consumption of water and sugar-sweetened beverages,

more water is consumed daily (920 ml/day) and weekly (6.4 times/week) than
in the private school. On the contrary, in the private school more sugary drinks are
consumed daily (823 ml/day) and weekly (2.5 times/week) than in the public school.
On the other hand, the total Kcal were higher in the private school (1555 Kcal), as
well as the % of sugars and soft drinks of the total caloric value (9.5%) and the Kcal
from sugars and soft drinks (147.73 Kcal). compared to public school.

Conclusion: The consumption of sugary drinks was lower compared to the
consumption of water. Calorie consumption was 1514.5 calories per day, of which
132.52 correspond to sugars, being 8.75% of the total caloric value. In the public
school, more water is consumed than in the private school. In private school, more
sugary drinks are consumed. The total Kcal were higher in the private school, as well as
the % of sugars and soft drinks of the total caloric value and the Kcal from sugars and
soft drinks compared to the public school.
Compliance with the recommendations of the Food Guidelines of Paraguay on the
consumption of water and sugar-sweetened beverages in both schools was low.
